Hackensack NJ 07601 Local Information

Hackensack is a city located in Bergen County, New Jersey and is its county seat. As of the 2020 census it has a population of approximately 44,266. Although it was officially named “New Barbadoes Township” until 1921, it has been known as Hackensack since at least the 18th century. The first inhabitants of the area were Lenni Lenape, known to settlers as “The Delaware Indians”. They lived along a river known to them as “Achinigau-hach” or “Achingsah-sack” which translates as “stony brook” and which is today called the Hackensack River. Hackensack is bordered by the Bergen County municipalities of Bogota, Hasbrouck Heights, Little Ferry, Lodi, Maywood, Paramus, Ridgefield Park, River Edge, South Hackensack, Teaneck and Teterboro.
